Summer is the most popular time of the year for rafting tours and activities. But, it’s important to stay safe during your summer outdoor adventures.

Isidora, a seasoned skipper with over a decade of experience at Monteriver Rafting Tara River, shares her expert advice on staying safe during a rafting tour.

“Always wear a life jacket, regardless of your swimming skills. Even with a life jacket, it’s crucial for safety that it fits snugly with all buckles fastened. If unsure about your choice of life jacket, consult one of the guides.”

She also said, “Never skip the helmet, regardless of the rapid’s difficulty. Would you let your kids ride a bike without a helmet? A helmet protects your head.”

“Wearing a wetsuit, vest, and suitable river footwear can greatly enhance your rafting experience. Leading camps provide this gear as part of their package. Ensure your chosen camp includes these essentials at no extra cost. Also, in warm weather, apply sunscreen and wear UV-protective sunglasses to avoid sunburn and hypothermia risks.”

Isidora emphasized, “Proper paddling technique is crucial for safety. Maintain one hand at the base and the other always on the top of the paddle’s “T” grip. This grip ensures paddle control.”

“While obvious, accidents happen. If you fall out, remain calm. Usually, you resurface near the raft. Grab it immediately or swim back to it. If you drift away, seek rescue options or other rafts. Your guide will cover this during the safety briefing.”

“Whether ejected or swimming for fun, learn the two key swimming techniques: on your back with head up and legs downstream, or front crawl towards the shore. Your guide will provide detailed instructions during the safety briefing.”

Isidora is an expert skipper at Monteriver Rafting Camp with over 10 years of experience. These insights can help ensure a safe and enjoyable rafting adventure this summer.
